The most common mistake in planning a Mizoram trip is underestimating the roads. On a map, Champhai looks like an easy day trip from Aizawl. In reality it is seven to nine hours each way.

This itinerary is built around real driving times. It covers a lot of the state without putting you in a vehicle for six hours a day.

The shape of the week

  • Days 1–2: Aizawl
  • Day 3: Reiek
  • Days 4–5: Thenzawl and the waterfalls
  • Days 6–7: Tamdil and back to Aizawl

If you have more time, the section at the end covers how to add Champhai or Phawngpui properly.

Day 1 — Arrive in Aizawl

Fly into Lengpui (about 1.5 hours from the city) or take the train to Sairang (about 20 km out). Either way, do not plan much for the arrival day.

Spend the afternoon at the Mizoram State Museum. It is compact — an hour is enough — but it reframes everything you will see afterwards. The pre-Christian era material in particular explains a great deal about how Mizo villages were organised.

Then walk Bara Bazar as it winds down for the day. Mizo women sell hill produce, bamboo shoots, dried fish and handwoven puan cloth down the tiers of the market.

Finish at Durtlang for sunset, looking back over the city ridges.

Day 2 — Aizawl properly

Morning at Solomon's Temple in Chawlhmun, about 10 km from the centre. It is the largest church in Mizoram, built in white marble over nearly two decades, and its scale is genuinely surprising. Dress modestly; access to the interior is restricted on some days.

Afternoon at Lalsavunga Park — a hillside park with a hanging bridge and a viewing deck that most itineraries skip entirely.

Evening: eat properly. Ask for bai, the vegetable-and-bamboo-shoot stew that anchors most Mizo meals, and vawksa rep, smoked pork.

Sunday warning. Mizoram is predominantly Christian and Aizawl genuinely closes on Sundays — shops, markets, most restaurants. If your week includes a Sunday, make it a travel day or a rest day, and buy anything you need on Saturday.

Day 3 — Reiek

29 km west, about 1 to 1.5 hours. The best day trip in the state.

Reiek Tlang rises to 1,465 m, and the walk to the summit takes 45 minutes to an hour through dense forest, with rope and step assistance near the top. No technical skill required — grippy shoes and reasonable fitness are enough.

At the base sits the Reiek Heritage Village, a recreated traditional Mizo settlement: bamboo-and-thatch houses, the zawlbuk bachelors' dormitory, grain stores, all laid out as a village rather than as museum cases.

On a clear winter morning you can see the plains of Bangladesh from the summit.

Consider staying the night. The grassland below the peak is one of the few places in Mizoram set up for camping, and the cloud settling into the valleys after dark is the thing people remember. It is cold from November through February — bring layers.

Day 4 — Aizawl to Thenzawl

About 91 km by road, 3 to 4 hours. Note that map apps often quote 43 km — that is the straight-line distance, not the road.

Arrive by early afternoon. Spend it at Tuirihiau Falls, where a path leads behind the curtain of water, and in the handloom weaving cluster. Thenzawl is Mizoram's weaving centre and the clatter of looms is a constant background sound. Buying a puan directly from the weaver costs less and pays more.

Day 5 — Vantawng Falls

Go early. Vantawng Falls is the highest waterfall in Mizoram at about 230 m and the 13th highest in India, dropping in two tiers through forest on the Vanva river, roughly 5 km south of Thenzawl.

It is viewed from a watchtower across the gorge — there is no path to the base. Morning light is best.

If you are travelling August to October, just after the monsoon, it is at full volume and genuinely loud. By March and April it thins considerably.

Add the deer park on the edge of town, and the hillside golf course carved into the forest, which is worth a look even if you have no intention of playing.

Day 6 — Thenzawl to Tamdil

Cut back north-east toward Tamdil, the second largest lake in Mizoram, sitting in a forested bowl about 10 km from Saitual town.

The name means "lake of mustard" — tam is the mustard plant, dil is a lake — from the legend that a giant mustard plant was uprooted from the spot and the hollow filled with water.

There is boating, forest around the shore, and good birdlife early in the morning. It is unhurried, which after three days of driving is the point. Weekdays are far quieter than weekends.

Day 7 — Back to Aizawl and out

About 85 km, 3 to 4 hours back to the capital. Leave time for the drive and for anything you meant to buy at Bara Bazar and did not.

If you have more time

Add Champhai (3 extra days). The rice bowl of Mizoram, on the Indo-Myanmar border, ringed by paddy terraces and — unusually for India — vineyards. But it is 188 km east and 7 to 9 hours each way, so it needs two nights minimum to be worth the journey. October and November catch the harvest, when the whole valley turns gold.

Add Phawngpui (4 extra days). The Blue Mountain, at 2,157 m the highest point in Mizoram, inside Phawngpui National Park. It is about 300 km south and a two-day drive with an overnight halt at Lawngtlai or Saiha. Entry requires forest department permission and a guide, arranged in advance. For serious trekkers and birders it is the finest landscape in the state.

When to do this

October to March for clear skies and comfortable trekking. August to October if the waterfalls are your priority. Avoid heavy monsoon if hill roads are central to your plan — landslides can close sections at short notice.
