About Tamdil Lake
Tamdil, or Tam Dil, sits in a forested bowl about 10 km from Saitual town and roughly 85 km east of Aizawl. The name translates from Mizo as “lake of mustard” — tam is the mustard plant, dil is a lake — from the legend that a giant mustard plant was uprooted from the spot and the hollow it left filled with water. It is the second largest lake in the state, after Palak Dil in the south.
It is an unhurried place. There is boating on the lake, forest around it, and a small resort and picnic infrastructure — Mizoram families come here at weekends. For a traveller it works best as a break in the long eastward drive towards Champhai, or as a slow day out from Aizawl.
Because it lies on the Aizawl–Champhai axis, Tamdil pairs naturally with that route rather than needing a dedicated trip of its own.

Boating on the lake
Small boats operate on the water — the simplest and best way to spend an hour here.
The surrounding forest
Thick hill forest rings the lake, with short walks along the shore and good birdlife in the early morning.
Picnic grounds
Established picnic areas and a small resort, busiest at weekends and during Mizoram holidays.
The mustard legend
The Mizo folk tale behind the name — a couple farming jhum in the valley, a giant mustard plant uprooted from the spot, and the lake that filled the hollow it left.
Best time to visit Tamdil Lake
October to March, when the weather is dry and the water is clearest. Weekday visits are much quieter than weekends, when the lake fills with local picnic groups.
How to reach Tamdil Lake
By road from Aizawl
Around 85 km east via Seling and Saitual — 3 to 4 hours on hill roads. Easiest with a hired vehicle, and naturally combined with the drive towards Champhai.
Suggested Tamdil Lake itinerary
Morning
Leave Aizawl early, stopping at viewpoints along the Seling road.
Afternoon
Boating and lunch at the lake, short forest walk.
Evening
Return to Aizawl, or continue east and overnight en route to Champhai.
