Thenzawl: Vantawng Falls, Tuirihiau and Mizo Handloom Weaving
Thenzawl is where you go for two things: water and cloth. Vantawng Falls, the highest waterfall in Mizoram, drops through forest a short way out of town, and Thenzawl itself is the state’s handloom weaving centre, where the Mizo puan is made on looms you can hear from the road.

About Thenzawl
Thenzawl, in Serchhip district, is a small town with a disproportionate number of reasons to stop. The first is Vantawng Falls — at about 230 metres (750 ft), the highest waterfall in Mizoram and the 13th highest in India, viewed from a watchtower across the gorge as it drops in two tiers through dense forest.
The second is weaving. Thenzawl is the handloom capital of Mizoram, and the clatter of looms is a constant background sound in parts of town. This is the place to watch a Mizo puan being woven and to buy one directly from the weaver rather than from a shop three states away.
Add Tuirihiau Falls, where a path leads behind the curtain of water, and a hillside golf course set into the surrounding forest, and Thenzawl earns a night rather than a passing stop.
Things to do in Thenzawl
Vantawng Falls
The highest waterfall in Mizoram at about 230 m (750 ft) and the 13th highest in India, roughly 5 km south of Thenzawl on the Vanva river. It falls in two tiers and is viewed from a watchtower across the gorge — the base is not approachable. Named after Vantawnga, a swimmer of local legend. Fullest and loudest during and just after the monsoon.
Tuirihiau Falls
A smaller, more intimate fall where a path runs behind the sheet of water. Easier to reach than Vantawng and the better one if you actually want to stand in the spray.
Handloom weaving cluster
Working looms across the town producing puan — the traditional Mizo wraparound cloth — in the patterns particular to different clans and occasions. Buying directly from a weaver costs less and pays more.
Thenzawl Golf Resort
A hillside course carved into the forest, unusual for the region and pleasant even if you have no intention of playing a round.
Thenzawl Deer Park
A conservation enclosure on the edge of town holding a small herd — around 17 sambar and other deer in a natural forest setting. A quick, easy stop, especially with children.
Best time to visit Thenzawl
For the waterfalls, late monsoon and just after — August to October — when Vantawng is at full volume. For comfortable travel and clear skies, October to March. In peak dry season (March–April) the falls thin out noticeably.
How to reach Thenzawl
By road from Aizawl
Around 91 km by road on the Aizawl–Thenzawl road, roughly 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic out of the city. Note that map apps often quote 43 km — that is the straight-line distance, not the road. Best done with a hired vehicle so you can stop at the viewpoints on the way.
From Serchhip
Thenzawl is roughly 43 km from Serchhip town, the district headquarters, making it an easy add-on if you are already in the district.

Drive from Aizawl with stops en route, arrive Thenzawl, afternoon at Tuirihiau Falls and the weaving cluster.
