Reiek Peak Trek: Heritage Village, Sunsets and Camping
Reiek Tlang is the easiest big view in Mizoram — a 1,465 m peak less than an hour and a half from Aizawl, with a short forest trek to a summit that looks out over the Aizawl ridges on one side and, on a clear day, the plains of Bangladesh on the other.

About Reiek
Reiek is the day trip almost every Aizawl itinerary should include. The peak — Reiek Tlang — rises to about 1,465 metres and the trail to the top runs through thick, mossy forest before opening onto a rocky summit with a genuinely enormous view.
At the base sits the Reiek Heritage Village, a recreated traditional Mizo settlement of bamboo and thatch houses showing how villages were laid out before the modern era — the chief’s house, the bachelors’ dormitory (zawlbuk), granaries and household tools. It is also the venue for the annual Anthurium Festival, when the grounds fill with music, food stalls and craft displays.
The grassland below the peak is one of the few places in Mizoram set up for camping, and staying overnight is what turns Reiek from a two-hour stop into the highlight of a trip: the cloud usually settles into the valleys after dark and lifts at sunrise.
Things to do in Reiek
The summit trek
A short but steep climb of roughly 45 minutes to an hour from the base through dense forest, with rope and step assistance on the last stretch. No technical skill needed — reasonable fitness and grippy shoes are enough.
Reiek Heritage Village
A full recreated Mizo village at the foot of the peak: bamboo-and-thatch houses, the zawlbuk bachelors’ dormitory, grain stores and traditional implements, laid out as a settlement rather than as museum cases.
Anthurium Festival
An annual state tourism festival hosted at Reiek, usually in September, built around the anthurium flower and featuring Mizo dance, music, fashion shows and handicraft stalls. Dates shift year to year — worth timing a trip around if they line up.
Camping on the grassland
Tented camping below the peak, with the valley cloud rolling in at dusk. Nights are cold from November through February; carry layers even if the day was warm.
The Bangladesh plains view
On a clear winter morning the flatlands of Bangladesh are visible to the west from the summit — the moment the scale of the Lushai Hills actually registers.
Best time to visit Reiek
October to March for clear summit views and comfortable trekking. November to February are coldest and clearest — ideal for camping if you carry warm layers. The monsoon makes the trail slippery and usually closes the view entirely.
How to reach Reiek
From Aizawl by road
About 29 km west of Aizawl via the Reiek road — 1 to 1.5 hours depending on traffic out of the city. A private taxi or a hired vehicle with a driver is the practical option; shared services are limited and unreliable for a day return.
From Lengpui Airport
Roughly 40 km. Reiek can be worked in as a stop on the way from the airport to Aizawl if you have a full day and an early flight.

Morning
Drive from Aizawl, reach the base by mid-morning, walk the Heritage Village.
Midday
Trek to the summit, allow an hour at the top for the view and photographs.
Evening
Return to Aizawl by dusk — or stay on and camp on the grassland below the peak.

How difficult is the Reiek Peak trek?
It is a short, moderately steep trek — around 45 minutes to an hour from the base to the summit through forest, with assisted sections near the top. No technical climbing is involved. Anyone with reasonable fitness and proper shoes can do it, and children commonly manage it.
Can you camp at Reiek?

Yes — it is the single best day trip from Aizawl. The drive is under 1.5 hours, and the peak, the trek and the heritage village together fill a comfortable day. Staying overnight to camp is better still if your schedule allows.
